I've been having a recurring daydream recently about buying the roof of a large building... Not quite a skyscraper, but maybe up to the height of a high-rise block of flats...

In my daydream, I buy the roof space on the condition that I can do whatever I want with the space without having to consult anyone else (yeah.).

I've crafted imaginary roof spaces into gorgeous gardens (unoriginal, but I had to start somewhere) and most recently I decided to build a whole street of houses on this roof... Each house had two floors, a front and back garden and incredible views!

So, I was excited (and a little bit sad) when I found out today that someone else has had my daydream already and, more than that, they'd actually managed to turn it into a reality - AMAZING (yet also sad, because that was my idea too and now it looks like I've copied it!)!

The development is on the roof of a shopping mall in Hengyang, China. However, as exciting as this rooftop street is, the developers, Hengyang Wings Group, did not have a license for the 25 luxury villas - which they built in 2009- so have been ordered to take them down. The property developer refused, so the authorities have now prohibited them from selling any of the properties (and that's one way for an asset to become a liability...).

I think it would be really sad if it has to go, but I know (just from my daydreams) that designing an efficient fire escape for a whole street's worth of people to evacuate from a high-rise roof is no mean feat!

Would you want to live in a house on the roof of a high-rise building?
